National Champs and China Bound

August 9, 2009

Columbia Karate Academy athletes just returned from a great showing at this year's National Karate Championships and Team Trials in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The annual event gives amateur athletes the opportunity to test their skills against the best in the country and earn a coveted US team spot. One was chosen to represent the US at the Shitoryu World Championships in Shanghai, China this coming August.

2009_Champs_courtney01.jpgThe event featured top regional adult and youth karate players competing under WKF/USA-NKF rules and protocols. Competitive divisions included Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring), and Team events. CKA's athletes were well prepared for the high level of competition. "We have worked hard this year to raise everyone's level. Our athletes have been dedicating 4 days a week to training, as well as attending out of town tournaments and seminars. We have been working with some of the top coaches in the country and it is showing," said coach Nick Reeder.

2009_Champs_Brit_Whit01.jpgThe youth players started out the first day with great performances and set the bar very high for the veteran players. "I couldn't be prouder of our youth players," added Reeder. "They were all very focused and determined." Those youth athletes included: Whitney and Britney Edwards, Lauren Gassett, Ian Ericson, Alex Bell, and Cole Gassett. They took medals in both individual events as well as the team events. They helped show that Columbia is cranking out high quality athletes, using many of the top coaching methods in the country, and should not be taken lightly.

2009_Champs_jon01.jpgCKA's teens and adults were great examples for their younger teammates to follow. Jon McDaniel, Courtney Gardell, Steven Becherer, Joe Bell, and Mark Toon all had some very exciting matches. Jon performed some of the best katas of his young career and earned himself a spot on the US Shitokai Team, which will be headed to Shanghai, China next month. "Most local kids are lucky to go compete across the country, Jon gets to go across the world, that's huge!," said Reeder. Courtney really shined and earned the title of National Champion in her teen advanced sparring division. "Courtney was the best I have ever seen her. She fought smart and highlighted her trip by landing five head kicks throughout the tournament," said Reeder. Steven was on his game as well earning the title of National Champion in his sparring division. "Steven's improvement was all-around this year. He is stronger, faster and more flexible," added Reeder. Joe was complimented by numerous referees on his thunderous round kick and powerful punches and Mark was the warrior he always is and showed the younger players how to lead by example, earning two medals this year.

2009_Champs_steven01.jpgCKA's overall results:

  • Britney Edwards - 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd
  • Whitney Edwards - 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd
  • Lauren Gassett - 3rd, 2nd, 2nd

Education on Self Defense for "Safety Town"

June 29, 2009

2009_safetytown.jpgFor the second year in a row, the Columbia Karate Academy was asked to be apart of Columbia Police Department's annual Safety Town. On Wed. June 17th, Sensei Nick Reeder visited Safety Town held at Parkview Elementary and led the kids and helpers through simple, short and effective self-defense exercises.

The children were quick learners, realizing that their loud voices are their strongest weapons. They were also very excited to be able to practice a basic stomp kick on the protective shields. We are very honored to be invited by Chief Joe Edwards to be a part of such a great safety course for our children and our community. The kids seemed to have a great time and learned a lot.

Golf Scramble a Hit!

June 8, 2009

The soon-to-be annual golf scramble fundraiser was a success. We had a scare with heavy rain and hail coming in around 8:30am, but by our start time of 11am the skies were clear and the sun was out.

We were able to hit our goal and raise $3000 on the button. Thank you to all of our players, sponsors, volunteers, and to our host, the Columbia Golf Club. We couldn't have done it without all of your support. It was a great event and we can't wait to do it next year!

National's, here we come!

Overwhelming Success at the Illinois State Championships

May 10, 2009

Illinois Shotokan Karate Clubs hosted the annual Illinois State Championships at Harper College in Paletine, Illinois Sunday, April 19. The event featured top regional adult and youth karate players competing under WKF/USA-NKF rules and protocols. Competitive divisions included Kata (forms), Kihon (basics), and Kumite (sparring) divisions.

Columbia Karate Academy's athletes were well prepared for the high level of competition. Said coach Nick Reeder, "The local events have been a great tool in our preparation for these regional tournaments, especially for our novice and intermediate players." Those players include: Whitney Edwards (3rd, 4th, 1st), Britney Edwards (4th, 2nd), Lauren Gassett (1st, 2nd, 1st), and Ian Ericson (top 8). This year's youngest player on Columbia's team was Griffin Reeder, age 8, who took 3rd in sparring.

Promising youth division advance players included Matthew Fogle (4th sparring), Cole Gassett (2nd basics), and Alex Bell. Alex set his personal best earning a 4th in forms and a 3rd in sparring.

CKA's teens and adults rolled through their sparring divisions. Courtney Gardell, Steven Becherer, Patti London, Mark Toon, and Nick Reeder all had some exciting matches. Courtney really shined and earned a silver medal in her teen advanced sparring division. Steven and Patti earned the title of 2009 Illinois State Champion in their intermediate sparring divisions. Mark had a very exciting back and forth match, but lost a close one. Sensei Nick took 2nd in the adult mens advance, while demonstrating in each match why sweeps are so effective.

"The athletes did a great job performing at a high technical level, with great sportsmanship, and without injuries" adds Reeder. Sensei Reeder also said, "The MVP would have to be our brave Lauren Gassett, who was not registered to compete in the sparring division, but summoned up the courage and earned the title of 2009 Illinois State Champion." Reeder added, "She also won her forms division and earned 2nd in her basics division."

So what's on the horizon for Team CKA?

The CKA team's next project, aside from a rigorous training schedule, is their first effort at fundraising. Team members and parent volunteers will put on a golf scramble, to be hosted by the Columbia Golf Club, on Monday June 8th.

"We want to give these talented athletes a chance to experience the highest level of our sport offered in the United States," says Reeder. Their chance will come in July at the USANKF National Championships, to be held in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. "The golf tournament is an effort to help aid in the cost of the travel and competitor's fees. If we can cover even some of the cost, then it will have been a success," adds Reeder.

Players will enjoy 18 holes of golf (with a cart), lunch, two complimentary drinks, and prizes. Team members have been passing out player registration and hole sponsor forms to businesses in Columbia and St. Louis. Anyone interested in playing on a 4 man scramble team or sponsoring a hole (business logo featured at the hole & in program), can call CKA at 618-286-3999. We expect good things from this promising team at this year's national event.

CKA Athelete Golf Fundraiser

March 28, 2009

Dear CKA Students and Parents,

I first want to thank everyone who has participated in this year's competitive season. All the local tournaments have been great learning experiences for all of our youth athletes because of your help. Amber and I feel blessed to have so many supportive families in our dojo.

This is the time of year when the local competition season is wrapping up and the higher level meets are getting closer. We are happy to announce that CKA will be preparing athletes for both the Illinois State Championship as well as the National Championship to be held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Our kids, and their parents, that are preparing for these events are sacrificing a lot, like any competitor trying to reach a goal.

They deserve some help. We have set a goal of raising $3000 to help with the incumbent travel costs. In order to assist them, we have decided to host our first CKA Competitive Team Fundraiser Golf Tournament. The details of the tournament are attached. Having a golf course next door made this an easy decision.

We are setting a low goal that each family from our dojo could find a Hole Sponsor and 2 golfers. It costs $50 for any business/person to sponsor one of the 18 holes. In return we will use their logo as a sign on the tee box for their hole and use their logo in our tournament program. Those golfing will receive 18 holes of golf, with a cart, lunch, and 2 drinks.

I know that there are many people who would like to help, but they may not be a golf enthusiast. We need volunteers to help with various contests and raffles that will be going on during the tournament. We appreciate any and all help that you can provide for our kids in their quest to bring us back a National Championship.

- Sensei Nick Reeder

CKA Invitational Tournament

March 7, 2009

Nick and Amber Reeder hosted the 5th annual Columbia Karate Academy Invitational Karate Tournament at Dupo High School in Dupo, Illinois. The event featured top regional adult and youth karate players competing under WKF/USA-NKF rules and protocols. Competitive divisions included Kata, Kihon, and Kumite divisions.

The mid-west coaches & referees came in force and showed why they and their athletes are being recognized at the national level. The students training under Jeff and Lorraine Bedard, Doug Dennis, Charles Jarnigan, Phil Thompson, Barry Powers, Brian Powers, Daryl Powers, and Demal Begovic all continued to raise the bar -- It made for some very exciting match-ups in the junior and adult advanced divisions!! With the State Championships only 9 weeks away, the future is bright for many of these young athletes.

The great sportsmanship and few injuries are a testament to our blossoming programs. The tournament was a great success because of all of the support and assistance we received from fellow coaches, referees, parents and athletes. A big "Thank You" to our administrators Noelle Richter and Mark Toon for keeping the schedule, tables, and referee organization running smoothely. Thank you to our EMT, Mrs. Parks, for all your help with our minor bumps and bruises. Amber Reeder, our "dojo mom", was the first to show up and last to leave, doing everything from getting us the gymnasium to cleaning up when we finished.

Congratulations to everyone who attended. Good luck at State!!!

Team CKA Medals During a Weekend of Tournaments

February 21-22, 2009

CKA athletes had a busy weekend. We had athletes attend both the Karate Life Studios Tournament in St. Louis, as well as the Jennifer Malloy Tournament in Chicago.

At Karate Life Studios, athletes really got their money's worth with the use of double elimination bracketing. The valuable lesson of having good conditioning was learned by many. The day was highlighted by our 12 year olds, Alex Bell and Matthew Fogle, who dominated their respected divisions.

The U.S. Team Trials were held during the Jennifer Malloy tournament in Chicago. The event provided a glimpse of the level that will be on display at this year's national championships. All the divisions were large and the level was high. Jon McDaniel capped off the day with a silver medal in the men's advanced kata division.

USA-NKF Referee Licensing and Seminar

February 14-15, 2009

AlexMiladi-port.jpgSensei Alex Miladi recently proctored St. Louis' first USA-NKF referee licensing examinations. Sensei Miladi is a charismatic individual with a wide range of experiences. He is an accomplished karate teacher, a World Karate Federation (WKF) certified referee, and is actively involved with the direction of the USA-NKF. Sensei Charles Jarnegan of "Karate Life Studios" hosted the two-day event.

Columbia Karate Academy had several students travel both days to take their examinations under Sensei Miladi: Sensei Sally David, Jerry Heltibrand, Mark Toon, Noelle Richter, and Steve Merckel. Each day lasted from 8am until 6pm. Both days were spent doing written and practical examinations, with the first day focused on kumite and the second day on kata.

At the conclusion of the second day, CKA's students had passed each of their examinations – with some individuals being "bumped" up to a second level higher than what they were testing for!! Sensei Miladi had many positive things to say about the CKA members, and the group in St. Louis as a whole.

Congratulations to Sensei Sally David, Jerry Heltibrand, Mark Toon, Noelle Richter, and Steve Merckel for your achievements outside of the dojo and in representing CKA!

Our Focus for the Next Few Months

January 6, 2009

When you or your child began your training karate with us, the desired result has always been and will continue to be, to build character, developing a stronger mind and body, and learning some self-defense in the process. That is what we offer and the values of respect, courtesy, and honor is what we always try to instill first and foremost. However, the sport aspect of our art has been continuously growing and evolving. And the training required to compete has proven to be both physically and mentally beneficial to its participants.

The sport season for our dojo has now begun. So over the next 4 months in class, we will prepare for the surrounding local scrimmages that everyone should try to attend. Our dojo will also host a scrimmage which we ask for required attendance from all CKA athletes.

It doesn't matter if your have only been training 3 months or if you are trying to make the US team. We have scrimmages to fit your level of play. Karate is one of the few sports where people will practice for months and months and never play in a scrimmage. What is the point in playing? The scrimmages are a tool for you to judge and gauge your performance and skill level in a safe and controlled environment.

We are also adding an additional practice specifically for conditioning and sport play. It will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm. It is labeled as "Competition Team" on your calendars. EVERYONE is welcome at these practices. They are meant to be full of energy and both physically and mentally rewarding. I hope that many of you take advantage of these upcoming opportunities. It is a great chance for everyone to participate and experience karate outside the dojo.

If you have any questions, please feel free to speak to us.

Thank you for your time, see you in class.

Sincerely,
Nick and Amber Reeder
